Camp Delaware: The American Civil War and Colored Troops

Educational camp on Civil War history at Main Library.

This evening event features a documentary that explores a pivotal chapter in American history—the formation and service of the 5th United States Colored Infantry Regiment. The film takes viewers through the soldiers' training at Camp Delaware in Delaware, Ohio, their preparation for battle, and their courageous contributions during the Civil War. Running 30 minutes, the documentary weaves together period music, personal letters from the troops, and speeches from historical figures including President Abraham Lincoln, Ohio Governors William Dennison and David Tod, and Secretary of War Edwin Stanton. You'll also hear from the soldiers themselves and learn about Medal of Honor recipients who served with distinction. After the screening, filmmakers will be on hand to answer questions, giving families a chance to dig deeper into these stories of sacrifice and determination. The program is rated unrated and suitable for all ages, making it a meaningful way to engage children and teens with this important history. This event is presented in partnership with the Art Tatum African American Resource Center and takes place on the second floor of the Main Library.
