Coopering – Wooden Tub
Learn traditional wooden-barrel craftsmanship at a historic village hands-on workshop.
This is a two-day intermediate woodworking class where participants build on skills learned in a beginner coopering course. You'll work with traditional hand tools like drawknives, croze knives, and cooper's planes to craft a wooden tub from start to finish. The hands-on experience covers shaping wooden staves, cutting grooves for the bottom, and securing everything together with cane hoops. Classes run 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days at the Cooper Shop within Historic Sauder Village.
The class is limited to just four students, ensuring personalized instruction from the village's Master Cooper. Registration costs $299 (or $279 for members), and your fee covers all materials and tool loans. Note that this class requires you to have previously completed the Beginning Coopering course focused on bucket-making—it's not designed for absolute beginners. Registration closes November 2nd at noon, so sign up early to secure your spot in this small, specialized class.
