Currents of Change: The Living History of the Great Lakes
Explore the history and ecology of the Great Lakes through living-history exhibits at the National Museum.
Your family can dive into what makes the Great Lakes so special—and so fragile—through this engaging exhibit. "Currents of Change" tells the story of how people and nature have shaped these vital freshwater ecosystems over centuries. You'll explore everything from early fur trading and fishing industries to modern challenges like invasive species, wetland loss, and algal blooms. The exhibit weaves together stories of struggle, resilience, and the ongoing efforts to keep the lakes healthy for future generations.
The National Museum of the Great Lakes offers plenty to keep everyone busy. Beyond this exhibit, you can tour nine galleries and climb aboard two historic vessels—a working tugboat and a massive 617-foot freighter. The museum is located right along the Maumee River with free parking and is certified as an autism-friendly center. Adult admission starts at $20, with discounts available for youth, seniors, and military visitors. Note that the historic ships aren't wheelchair accessible, though the main museum has accessible routes throughout. The exhibit runs through mid-October 2026, so plan your visit soon.
