Public Stargazing at the BGSU Observatory
Look through real telescopes at stars and planets at BGSU's rooftop observatory.
Your family can peek through powerful telescopes at the stars and planets during these open observatory sessions on the roof of the Physical Sciences Laboratory Building. You'll have access to both a professional-grade research telescope and smaller amateur telescopes, and staff will help you identify major constellations and any planets visible that night. It's a hands-on way to explore the night sky with expert guidance.
Plan to dress warmly—the rooftop is noticeably colder and windier than ground level. Keep in mind that sessions only happen when skies are clear; if there's rain, snow, fog, or significant cloud cover, the event will be canceled. To check whether the session is on before you head out, call (419) 372-8831 about an hour before the scheduled start time for a recorded update. Once you arrive, an observatory staff member will greet you and show you around the different viewing stations. Please silence cell phones and avoid using your phone's light to help everyone's eyes adjust to the darkness.
