Southern Tales and Tails

K–5th graders read to a therapy dog at the library, boosting confidence and fluency.

Does your child need a little motivation to practice reading? This program pairs young readers with D'Oreo, a trained therapy dog, for one-on-one reading sessions at the library. Kids in kindergarten through 8th grade can sign up for a 15-minute time slot to read aloud to this friendly companion, who may even demonstrate a trick or two. The relaxed, judgment-free setting helps build reading confidence while making practice feel like playtime rather than a chore. Here's what to know: bring a book your child is comfortable with or is currently working through. Siblings can share a single session if needed—just include both names in your registration. While your child spends their time with D'Oreo, you're welcome to sit nearby in the room or just outside, giving them the space to connect independently with the dog. Registration is required and opens on November 1st.
