Try it! Atlatls (Adults and 8+)

Learn to throw ancient atlatls (spear-throwers) at Side Cut Metropark—a hands-on history and physics lesson.

Discover an ancient hunting tool that's been used for over 30,000 years. An atlatl is a throwing dart weapon that Native American hunters relied on to reach prey from impressive distances—some could travel the length of a football field. During this hands-on session at Sledding Hill, you'll learn about the fascinating history behind this tool and understand why it was so effective for hunters. This is a great opportunity for families with kids eight and older, as well as adults, to try something truly different. You'll get to experience what it felt like to use an atlatl firsthand by attempting to hit your own targets. It's a unique way to connect with history while enjoying an outdoor activity together.
