"Weaving with Paper Ephemera" Workshop with Jonpaul Smith

Paper weaving workshop at Weavers Guild—learn a textile art with hands-on instruction.

Jonpaul Smith, a renowned artist, will lead this two-day workshop where participants create their own collage-based woven paper mandalas. This hands-on class explores paper weaving beyond the simple craft-room versions many remember from childhood, transforming torn and cut papers—including old magazines, books, and personal documents—into artistic creations. Day one focuses on assembling small circular collages using meaningful images and papers you select, while day two teaches the technical skills needed to weave and glue your materials together successfully. This workshop welcomes anyone 16 and older with no prior art experience required, though participants do need the dexterity to handle cutting tools like X-acto knives and scissors, as well as weave paper strips together. The class is limited to 12 people. Registration costs $150 for Weavers Guild members and $175 for non-members, plus a possible materials fee (up to $10) if you use paper from the instructor's collection. You'll need to bring various papers, cutting tools, a self-healing mat, and a metal ruler—a detailed supplies list is available. Registration closes June 22 at 5 p.m.
